On any controller like ps4, xbox, gamecube those 2 buttons aren't used so make them c buttons, and the stick will be c-up and c-down. My final advice would be to change the 2 top and right buttons to c-left and c-right. Gamecube is good because it has notches, and it's durable and good for throws. Official gamecube controller with an adapter from raphnet. The 3rd option is slightly worse than the previous options, but I would recommend the most tbh. Both those controllers will need a raphnet n64 to usb v3 adapter. I won't go into detail about the differences but Hori is durable, and doesn't take much time to get used to. The 2nd best option is similar to the first advice but instead get a hori minipad 64. If you play a lot it might be worth spending more money on a controller or investing in a N64. Now the N64 controller route is probably best, but can be expensive if you play a lot. I highly recommend an adapter from raphnet, they are low lag and high quality, just a bit pricey. I recommend drogies video on how to find one on ebay, and look for good video on how to lube/clean the controller. Getting a good N64 controller on ebay is basically lottery, try to get one locally where you can test it or get from good seller in the community. The issue though it is bad for throws and wears down easily. The very best controller you can use on EMU is original N64 controller. They work but they are honestly pretty bad for what other options are out there. Honestly you want to stay away from controllers with no notches (xbox, ps4). From someone who speedruns sm64 and is in the community, here's my advice. Disclaimer this advice is for someone who wants to speedrun, casual players can use pretty much anything besides 3rd party N64 controllers and gamecube style sticks.
